Faculty of Education
LAMAU bbeing a faith based institution, underscores the general problem which underpins the secondary education sector in Malawi. Through its research department, the University found out that the nation is suffering from moral, spiritual, ethical, and environmental degradation. All these negative impacts are facilitated by lack of civic education and high population growth.
The Bachelor of Education in Humanities (Geography, History and Social & Development Studies) programme responds very well to the global and national strategic development agenda. It is in this context that LAMAU would like to produce teachers who are well qualified, dedicated, loving, caring, creative and passionate in the delivery of quality secondary education in Geography and Social & Development Studies. In short, LAMAU would like to make a significant difference in teacher education.
The aim of the Bachelor of Education (Geography and Social & Development Studies) programme is to provide effective and reflective teachers fully equipped to meet needs of the revised secondary school curriculum in Malawi. This programme responds positively to the Ministry of Educations’ goal of increasing the number of well-trained secondary school teachers.
Trends in educational practices are shifting from emphasis on teaching to emphasis on learning, and much emphasis on outputs than inputs. There is often a gap in how and when students are first able to safely apply these competencies in the workplace. Students’ placement in what may be real work life scenarios will allow them to try out their skills in virtual environments. To this effect, students will be expected to portray how much of learning to teach shall have been internalized. Every student who joins LAMAU in Education humanities department shall have to undergo teaching practicum. The University shall involve students in clinical as well as reflective teaching practice as this moves the student beyond the classroom theories to the reality of practicing their profession. The University shall use a blended reflective practitioner model.
